Voted #1 On-Air LA Radio People for 2005!

posted Wednesday, 28 September 2005

I'm a bit late on this story, but 2 weeks ago, the Kevin and Bean Show were voted by their LA radio peers (management, promotion, talent, engineering, and support staff) as the "#1 On-Air BEST LARP (LA Radio People) of 2005"! Woo hoo! They beat out such legends as Howard Stern (#2) and Vin Scully (#3).

To top it off, their boss Kevin Weatherly (whom they refer to as "Mr. Weatherby") was voted "#1 Off-Air LARP of 2005".

Congratulations guys, all-around! Well-deserved!! And I heartily second those nice comments below.

Don Barrett's LARP site is an awesome news/gossip publication about the Los Angeles-area radio scene. Check it out.

Official announcement below, thanks to Don.

KROQ's Triplets Voted BEST LARP of 2005

(September 12, 2005) Today marks the culmination in the countdown of the Top 10 BEST On- and Off-Air LARP of 2005. KROQ's morning team for the past 15 years, Kevin & Bean, was voted #1 BEST On-Air LARP of 2005. With some irony, their boss, Kevin Weatherly, pd at KROQ and JACK/fm, won for the BEST Off-Air LARP of 2005. Fifty active Los Angeles Radio People were sent a ballot late last spring and asked to vote for their five favorite in each category, along with an anonymous comment for each selection.

Some of the observations about Kevin & Bean:

a.. "They still keep it fresh and topical."

b.. "Ralph Garman is a major part of why they still rule. And while they can't stand him, it would seem nobody comes near Doc on the ROQ's news delivery and 'tude. The show would suffer considerably, as would KROQ, without him."

c.. "Even hundreds of miles apart now, Kevin and Bean's morning show has
consistently ranked in the Top 5 of L.A.'s morning broadcasts. Ever since
that infamous 'fake murder confession' that called attention to the then
relatively unknown pair, they've taken the ball and run with it. Up until
then, KLOS's Mark & Brian had the morning market on rock and roll radio. To
be able to first unseat, and then stay on top of the duo on 95-5 for so many
rating periods, is a tribute to their own style of AM fun and entertainment."

d.. "I love how they toe the FCC line!"

e.. "Focused, funny and state of the art for younger demos."

f.. "Coupla baby boomers remaining relevant to generations X, Y & Z."

g.. "Still the funniest morning show in L.A."

h.. "The dynamic duo. Couldn't imagine the morning without them."

i.. "Include their large posse. Extremely well prepared with enough depth
in their crew to cover if one or two individuals are off their game. That
and their hours of off-air planning make the show 'sound' spontaneous.'"

j.. "What should feel old by now never does. This is the show all my friends listen to."

k.. "They are always evolving and re-inventing themselves and their show.
Ralph, Lisa May, and Money are such an important part of the team, and Kevin
& Bean embrace them instead of trying to make them sidekicks. Kevin & Bean
are always topical, funny and conduct compelling interviews with cool
guests. You can never go wrong listening to KROQ in the AM."

l.. "Entertainment at its finest."

m.. "Who would have thought that these guys would have lasted this long?
They are fun, don't take themselves too seriously, they know their audience,
the music, and all that has kept them great."

n.. "Smart, goofy, and consistently relevant."

o.. "Still day in and day out, entertaining, fun and hard to turn off,
even for a pd of another station."

p.. "They continue to be hugely successful, not only 12+, but with the
target demos of 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54. They have a great ear for talent -
Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, and now Ralph Garman have all come out of this
school."

Admirers of Kevin Weatherly wrote:

a.. "Heard he's great to work for."

b.. "Totally on his game keeping KROQ afloat in the face of a musical
drought and creating the best version of JACK in the country."

c.. "For taking a risk by eliminating jocks from former-Arrow with the new
JACK format. In a few years he'll either be honored for creating a sensation
or shunned for beginning the decline of local personality radio."

d.. "Great pd. Amazing work with KROQ."

e.. "May just be the most influential person in the ENTIRE radio industry."

f.. "They manage to keep my 53-year-old wife as a P1 while also appealing
to the 18-34 year old audience."

g.. "Still on it after all these years."

h.. "Even though I loved all the Arrow djs except Johnny B., the sound was
dull. The new variety of music is great. I hope they settle down and put
some of those great unemployed LARP back to work."

i.. "Brand manager extraordinaire."

j.. "These days one might wonder if programmers have forgotten that radio
is about the music. But that is not true about Weatherly. He knows music and
sets the standard for bringing in new bands, bringing back old bands that
had hits, and playing tracks on CD's that other stations would not normally
play. KROQ has consistently sounded awesome, keeping listeners loyal."

k.. "Kevin has kept KROQ on top for so long and now has brought us JACK.
Innovative and widely respected throughout the country for his programming
acumen."

l.. "Let's face it; Classic Rock's audience in L.A. has diminished
considerably. It came to a point where there was really only room for ONE
vehicle and KLOS survived the battle. Arrow 93's consistent under-performance had to lead to JACK. It was the only real and viable format to install. Kevin's immediate rating surge is very impressive in the highly competitive L.A. radio market. The latest extrapolation had 93.1/fm up to a 2.8 12-plus. In that short of time - that's huge. In addition, Kevin has piloted the always dominant KROQ to the longest string of rating period success in memory for that format. Though it has shown some erosion; ironically, at the hands of his other station, JACK, KROQ will continue to be one of the most dominant fm music format stations in the country. It is truly the World-Famous KROQ 106.7; also, the annual Weenie Roast rock
concerts are now an integral part of the Southland lifestyle."

m.. "I've never met him, but between JACK and KROQ, he's just damn
impressive."

n.. "Kevin has been able to keep KROQ in front, despite the fact that the
station has been attacked by Indie. He also had the guts to push through the
dumping of Arrow for JACK."

o.. "Dude rules. End of story."

Awesome! Congratulations to them! My favorite quote was, "Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, and now Ralph Garman have all come out of this school."
