April Fools Archive

posted Sunday, 27 March 2005
Kevin and Bean's annual April Fools pranks have become the stuff of radio legend. To...someone. Anyway, they have had some doozies, and here are some of the past pranks that I could find, or remember. Please help me fill in the blanks! (Or help with dates)

2005 - Ralph's Bachelor Party: Adam West, a topless women's volleyball team, The Governorator, William Shatner, and porn stars all dropped by a Party Machine held live in Venice in honor of Ralph impending nuptials.  While the party was fake, Ralph's marriage, perhaps more surprisingly, was not!

2004 - Kevin and Bean Fired From KROQ: In repsonse to the FCC's crackdowns, the boys pretended they had been fired for joking about Bean's domain, niggapleeze.com. Stryker took over the morning show, and even all mentions of Kevin and Bean were removed from the KROQ website, causing much grief and outrage.

The 909 Apology Tour: (From Gomi No Sensei) "For quite some time kevin and bean have made fun of the nine.oh.nine [the inland empire, valley of the dirt people] so last year they did a free show in an ontario parking lot with blink one.eighty.two to make up for all the crap they've given everyone who lives in the nine.oh.nine. not only did the free show not exist but the city of ontario had to bring out extra police to take care of the traffic congestion. everyone involved in the prank was in the kroq studio, including blink one.eighty.two who recorded a live set for the occasion. " Also, as I recall, Mr. Weatherby (the Enemy of Fun), made them announce at the end of the show that it had all been an April Fool's prank, to their extreme displeasure.

1999 - The Guy Expecting To Get Some: (From Don Barrett's LA Radio People) "Yesterday was the day to conceive in order to be in contention for the first baby of the new Millennium. KROQ’s Kevin & Bean wanted the new baby made on their show. They solicited two listeners (one had to be ovulating) and invited them to the studios. There was chemistry between the two and they agreed to have sex. They had a doctor to check for AIDS and ovulation. Everything was OK. Kevin and Bean took the willing pair into the station conference room where there was a couch that folded down into a bed. They asked how long it might take so they could time out the rest of the program. They both giggled. All the lights were down and candles were scattered around the room. She retired to another room in order to get into "something more comfortable." After a commercial break, Kevin and Bean escorted the young lady back into the conference room where the male listener was standing naked except for his underwear. They flipped on the lights and yelled April Fools. What a dirty trick, but it was great radio for the imagination..."

The DJ Switch With Power 106: (From Gomi No Sensei) "Turning on the radio back in high school i was shocked to find out that kevin and bean had traded places with the local rap station [kpwr, power 106] djs "the baker boyz". of course the standard "fish out of water" comedy applied as both sets of djs acted as if they'd been traded for good. still one of my favorite promos that they still break out from time to time is "kevin and bean, waking that ass up on power 106".

1998 - The Thom Yorke Fight: (From Buccanneer Times) "Capitol Records finds itself flooded with calls after an alleged fistfight breaks out on L.A. station KROQ-FM's "Kevin & Bean" morning show. The "fight" between the hosts and Radiohead's Thom Yorke follows jibes about Yorke's lazy eye. In fact, Yorke is not even in the Los Angeles studio, and Kevin and Bean simply mixed in an old radio interview while making the taunts."  Listen to an audio clip here.

The Format Switch With a Spanish Station: (From Gomi No Sensei) "Way back in the day [and i'm a bit shady on this] they did their april fools day show in spanish. the number one station in the los angeles radio market at the time was a latin station so kevin and bean decided to get with the times and do their entire show "en espanol".

Another of my favorites is when K & B moved up daylight saving time early, saying it was one hour later than it really was, so TONS of people called in the next day, thinking they were late to work, when they got they waaay early! D'OH!

The Mall of America West was the best one because of the names of the fake stores, like "The Big GAP" for fat people.

hilarious.

I thought I remembered Kevin and Bean saying that the Thom Yorke bit wasn't from a past interview tape but from a then "un heard of" Ralph Garman. K & B were talking about past pranks when they said this. I could be wrong but I'm almost positive that they said that. It was in the day where Jimmy was still on the show and Ralph just did call in voices every so often.

I remember the Mall of America April's Foll joke too. It was spectacular. They even had one bit where it sounded like they forgot to turn the mics off and you could hear them "moving" equipment to the next store location. They had Dodger players there for the mall's "opening" and the next day the city council filed a complaint and threatened to charge the station for all the overtime the city employees had to log in for answering calls regarding where the new mall was.

And the Thom Yorke thing wasn't prerecorded interviews. They had someone actually impersonate him in the studio.

And finally, way, way back in the day they switched places with Mark & Kim at KOST. Mark mentioned it the other day when they were razzing him about getting a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.

I believe it was '92 (or '93) when Pirate Radio "took over" the 106.7 channel. The prank was so convincing, and I was so dispirited, that I had even forgotten it was April 1st. But I'd have to agree that the Mall of America West gag was the best...how could I have not had a clue about the joke, with store names like "Heavy Gap" (clothing for fat people) and "Cheeses of Nazareth" (dairy products endorsed by the Pope)? And to think I was seriously thinking of cutting off early from work that day to spend the afternoon at the mall's "opening"!!!

Pirate Radio was '94. In '93 they pretended it was the '70s. Disco and the Theme from SWAT all morning long. Plus Doc's news was all '70s too. "... brought to you by Shell Oil. It comes from the ground so, you know the supply is limitless."
